why do lighthouse lights go through fog and not regular lights?

They only do a little better because they are brighter. Not intended to go through fog. Light house lights are intended for ships to locate them and see them to navigate by them. That is why they use foghorns for fog. They are a low frequency that travels a long distance across water and they will penetrate through not too dense objects.
