around the whole rigid edge of the quarter is hollow to some point my dad has had it for sometime and has always tried to get me to find out about this.

It is hard for me to visualize what you have from the description of "the rigid edge of the quarter is hollow."
It is hard to say for certain but it sounds like you have a mis-struck quarter possibly a broadstruck quarter from when the collar gets loose during the striking.
There is an entire field of Numismatics devoted to coin errors with many dealers and collectors specializing in them.
You should take it to a Coin Dealer in your area and ask for a description of what has happened to the coin. Even better is if you can locate a coin show and then walk it around to three or four dealers.
A final note: It is not uncommon for some of these things to occur from human induced errors, people playing with coins using a hammer and a vise or other equivalent destruction.

Sounds like a magicians coin to me. Try pulling it apart. Back before x-rays silver dollars were hollowed out to smuggle things. Most of the time a dime was in the quarter, for it was used for tricks.
