Mitt Romney is only one of many Mormons in politics...

2007-01-30 13:30:02 · update #2

The Mormon church in no way gets involved with politics other supporting members to vote for who they think is best.
Romney's spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom says the governor's ''first obligation is to fulfill his duty of office, and that would take precedence over anything. If he were to get a Kim Clark-like call, he would not react in the same way. This is a governor who has signed a law permitting Sunday alcohol sales, and who has been open to an expansion of gaming. [Observant Mormons do not smoke, gamble, or drink spirits.] This is by no means someone who is marching in lockstep with his church."

If he/she were closely aligned with my political ideologies, I couldn't care less what their religious beliefs are.

I vote for the individual that has politics that most reflects my own, and the religion doesn't matter. However, I can see that some will make religion an issue if Romney runs. Critics did when Kennedy ran.

That being said, the Mormons I know are conservative people both morally and fiscally with a deep sense of patriotism and a strong belief in a Heavenly Father and Jesus. They believe that God inspired the founding fathers to create this great country. If we had a presidential candidate who was morally and fiscally conservative and humble enough to pray to God for advice then that would seem to be my kind of candidate.

I'm not American so I can't, but I would if I could. The Mormon church is very careful to say that people should follow the dictates of their own conscience when voting and presumably in public office too. The church does not take a political stand (although it will take a moral one where necessary) so I am happy that Mitt Romney would not be just a puppet for the church. And I think he's a really good man.

We have a Mormon MP here, and I don't even know what party he represents!

Yes i would vote for a Mormon President. You want to know it is not just because that i belong to the church of Jesus Christ of later-day Saints but i believe that they would make a good president. If you are reffering to Mitt Rommey then i believe that he would make a good president for the United States of American. Some of you might remember the Olympics in Salt lake City Utah. Near Olympic time there was scandals and the former Olympic president and his staff got fired because of the scandals. Mitt Rommey came to Utah and turned the games and the scandals around that was surrounding them. It has been said and i am sure that i will here it again that the Salt Lake City Olympics were the best Olympics games in history. So i believe that Mitt will make an excellent president i am just wondering what side though that he is going to take on for the Iraq War. But i can see him to this country around and it will not just because that the belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day saints.
A similar question like this arose a while back ago. With President Kennedy. President Kennedy was Catholic and people believe that they did not want a Catholic president. Well we all should know the story there that something turned around.

One more thing to let you know we can go and vote for a president but just to let you know that our votes do not count at all.

Really, I am puzzled by your question. . .

If the person is qualified, and they have a platform that I agree with, and they are going to do something other than lie, kill others and start wars, then I would vote for them. What in the world does race, religion, sex or sexual orientation have to do with anything?? Anyone that involves those things in their decision is not a very educated voter - they look too much at the person and not at the issues at hand.

If you don't think that is a problem in selecting a pres, I will point out the "conservative, family oriented, military experienced" yahoo in office right now. At an approval rating hovering around 30 %, I am thinking that other factors need to be weighed than their personal lives.

Definitely! It would be a refreshing change to have a president who is honest, straight forward, family oriented, and firm in their beliefs.

I have read a fair portion of the Book Of Mormon, and a few other books describing their religion and beliefs. While I do not agree with some things, I understand why those things are important to the Mormons. Thanks to a Mormon friend I enjoyed several visits by Elders of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Even though I explained that I was not intending to convert, but simply wanted to learn from them, the elders were more than happy to tell me more about their lives and their beliefs.

I do not think we could go wrong with a Mormon president.

Speaking as a Mormon myself, maybe. If I were in agreement with his policies and politics, yes. I don't take religion into consideration in the polling station. Having said that, I am a Canadian too and don't qualify to vote in the United States. I just get to cheer. (Or in the case of the Clintons, boo.)

Yes, if it were someone who I believed would do an excellent job leading our country. I would not vote for a president solely because he/she was Mormon, nor would i vote against someone because he/she was Mormon. When I am looking for the best person to lead our country, religion has very little affect on who I vote for (the lone exception being when someone's religion would lead them to make decisions/laws that would be bad for the country).

As you are referring to Mitt Romney, it depends who he is running against. I would vote for Romney before I would vote for Hilary Clinton, that's definitely for sure.

First off, Mormons are not Christians. The terms contradict. But I'd vote for Romney if that's the choice. He does have a public record. And he has been in charge as a Governor rather than in the legislature where you don't get leadership experience. So he has the leadership qualities and the record to back it up.

I would vote for Mitt Romney. I have no problem with his religion, I have dealt with Mormons on many occasions and they are very kind and helpful. Now I would not vote a Muslim nor a former Muslim....no way obama

I like Mormons in a general sense, have known quite a few and admire them in some ways even though I don't agree with all their beliefs and tenets.

That said, no, I wouldn't vote for a Mormon. Based on my understanding of things, a Mormon in good standing would be subject to the dictates of the Mormon Church, not the people who voted that person into office.

If I'm wrong, I'm sorry for my ignorance, and would be happy to hear differently from the Mormon leadership.
