Get her a diaper cake with specific neccesities inside. Do one with lots of bath time accesories. Do one with all the baby medications (teething gel, gas drops, tylenol). Do one with cute carseat and crib toys!!
Diaper cakes are great....they are attractive and can double as both the centerpiece and the gift to the new mom!!
I make them, by the way. Really great pricing, too!! I work quick and ship quickly, too!!
Check out my site, if you like!

Oh...
You know what would be nice? Something for the mum. And/or dad! No one ever thinks of the two parents! And when I had my girl I got two things- I got a Mama/Toto set with lotion for myself and chocolate covered Brazil nuts. Nothing posh, as you can see but BOY- was I ever a happy girlie.
My favourite gift now is a baby blanket or nice set of booties for the baby and a book called Baby Manual which is hilarious stuff. Caution- do not give to a mum who has recently had a cesaerean section! It will pop stitches.
Other than that I can recommend a nice set of designer clothes for a six to 8 month old (and work out what time of year that will roughly be at! Nothing worse than having the Winter clothing fit in the Summer and vice versa) because parents DO love something nice for their child!

My favorite gift at my baby shower was a gift card for dinner and a movie. It was wonderful to go out a few months after my son was born. There was no guilt in spending extra money on ourselves because it was all prepaid...and it gave us a little taste of what it was like before the baby.
However, if she is in desperate need of baby things and has very few people buying for her than go for the baby stuff. Most women register at babies r us, target, or walmart...so check if she has a registry (you can look up her name on their websites). Otherwise buy clothes that are 9-12 months, size 2 diapers, diaper cream, baby lotion, baby shampoo.

Some ideas that come to mind would be maybe a stylish diaper bag filled with baby necessities, baby blankets (a nice hand knitted blanket), baby microwavable dishes, and if you are all pitching in and if its within your budget, a baby swing which I found to be a life saver as both of my kids were very colicky.

Don't do diapers! She may have one kind she likes and then she'll have to return the ones you get her. My favorite item is a shopping cart cover. I starting using it when my daughter was first able to sit in a shopping cart or high chair and my daughter is now 4 and we still use it. She loves it! I love it because it avoids all kinds of germs too!!

D batteries. Frozen meals. Halo sleepsacks in 3-6 month sizes and bigger - for after swaddling is done. Bjorn plastic bibs. If she has hard kitchen/dining floors, a swifter wet jet is great too!

The one thing that I try to get for every new mom is one of those Fisher Price crib aquariums. Both of my kids LOVED it, and it helps put them to sleep. Great gift for anyone.

She really needs diapers... avoid tiny outfits... try to fet clothes that are 6-12 months, and make sure they are season appropriate (shorts in winter doesn't work)... gift cards are helpful.
