yes, traditionally they are two different words

The word queer has traditionally meant "strange" or "unusual".

Gay is an adjective meaning "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy".

In today's society, however, they have become basically the same word.

Well, the dictionary definition for "gay" is "happy or cheerful" and "queer" actually means "odd or bizarre", so they are two different words in that sense. But as for the homosexual connotation, gay is just a shorter form of homosexual, but queer can sometimes be taken as kind of a slur; it depends on how it's said or who says it, i guess ( kind of like midget vs dwarf/"Little Person") But the meaning of each word basically depends on how the person saying it means it.

I DO NOT USE EITHER TO DESCRIBE A PERSON, BECAUSE TO ME GAY IS HAPPY,AND QUEER IS ODD.
(NEITHER HAS TO DO WITH HOMOSEXUALITY),
SO I GUESS THEY DO MEAN TWO DIFFERENT THINGS TO ME.
