Ok, my problem started like yesterday. I decided that I would reinstall my Windows XP OS. After I went through the process of reinstalling the OS, I went to go onto my internet, but it will absolutely not connect. Is there anything I need to install to make the internet work? Or is it the network adapter?

You need to install the correct drivers for your network adapter. Most likely Windows did not have the correct drivers built in so you need to install them yourself. The tough part is you won't be able to download them since you can't get on the internet.

Right click "My Computer" and choose "Manage". This will open "Computer Management". Once in there click on "Device Manager" on the left hand side. Once you do that you will be able to see all the hardware that is installed on your PC in the right hand pane. Anything with an exclamation mark "!" is not installed correctly. Typically after an XP reinstall your video, sound, and network cards do not have the correct software drivers installed.

If you do not have the disks that came with your PC when you bought it then you'll have to download the drivers using someone elses computer. If you get the network card first then you can do the rest on yours once the internet is working again. If you have a Dell go to Dell's website and look up your PC by model number (same thing for any other brand) and they should have the drivers you need. The problem is sometimes a particular model can be sold with different types of network cards so you may see several you could download and only one of them will work right. To get around that you can either try each one until you get the right one or open your PC and try to read the brand and model off the card or motherboard - good luck with that one if you're not comfortable opening a PC or know what to look for.

Once you have the driver you copy it to your PC and extract it to a folder if it's compressed. Then right-click the network adapter in Device Manager and choose "Update Driver". Then read everything carefully. You'll come to a spot where it asks you were the driver is. You'll want to browse to the location you extracted it to. If it's the correct driver it will install without issue. If it says it can't find a suitable driver than you got the wrong one.

You may be better of bringing it to a store like Best Buy and having them do it.

So next time you decide to do something like this you'll want to look in Device Manager first to see the exact model of your network card (when it's installed correctly it shows this) and then download the driver and burn it to a CD so you're not screwed afterwards.

Good luck.
