Sort of open ended, I like to think the character really lived it - do you think he made it all up?

That's exactly the point. Which story do you like better? The somewhat slow first part of the book is about which belief Pi likes better. He chooses all of them. You may choose which you like better.

It doesn't matter to Pi what others believe. He makes his own choices about his beliefs. You have the same choice.
