I have already asked this question but the answers I got are actually subjects or rather what the song is about. I need the theme which is what the message in the song tells us about life. Anyone have an answer?

Don Henley begs the subject of the song, a "desperado", to return home, and tells him that the things he enjoys doing will hurt him eventually. The theme is therefore that searching for things you can't have "will hurt you somehow." "And freedom, oh freedom,
Well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking,
Through this world all alone" Friends mean more than "ridin' fences". Pretty straightforward song.

the song is about settling down and starting a family. It talks spefically about a cowboy, but the message is about people being so busy with their own lives that they don't take time for love and relationships, and then one day realize they're old and lonely, and they missed their shot. Without love and family the rest of it is really just wasted effort.

The song says you can go through life being single and never letting love into your life but when you get older you will be lonely because you will be alone because you wouldn't 'just let somebody love you'... You're afraid you will get hurt so bad you just don't let anyone in until you wake up one day and realise that it was YOU who hurt YOU by not letting anyone into your heart.
