Windows XP users

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

It could be that your laptop's masterboot record is corrupted. boot your computer using your Windows XP CD and press R for Recovery mode. Once you're in the Windows Recovery Console, Type fixboot and fixmbr commands to fix your masterboot record.

I would think it was NTLDR is missing.

This file is one of the required files to load Windows.
If it is missing you can manage to reinstall it using a set of BootDisk img or worst case scenario you might need to re-install windows completely if you don't have a working computer to create a BootDisk Image.

Hope this to be satisfactory.

you know what, it happened to me too and since it was my laptop, it didnt have any floppy disk drive so i couldn't use bootable disks. i put in my win xp cd but it still didnt work. i tried everthing i could from the internet and at the end i had to reformat it :(
one good tip, try pressing F12 when turning on your computer, you might be able to choose what to boot from.
if you are going to reformat your hard drive, and you want your files from it, you may be able to transfer them if you take the hard drive out and acess it with another computer. you'll have to buy something called hard drive enclosure.
good luck

I've never seen that message before. Are you sure you don't mean NTLDR is missing?
