An aphorism is an adage, proverb, or saying that has been in common use to outline an opinion or view.
A few common examples
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
A stitch in time saves nine.
Don't kill the bird that lays golden eggs.

"I think, therefore I am" -Descartes. It means that if you are able to think about your existence, it proves you must exist (or else how could you be thinking?)
"Marry in haste; repent at leisure." -Scottish proverb. Basically, marriage that happens too quickly, before you know the person, will be something you regret for a long time.
"That which does not kill us makes us stronger."- Nietzsche. Any problems that we overcome will make us a stronger person.
These are just a few, google "famous aphorisms" for more.
