the only test for down syndrome they ever really recommend for women under 30-35 is just a blood test that would say whether or not you are at a higher risk for the baby having down syndrome. if it comes out pos. then they ask if you want the amnio done. i am under 30 and am preg. with #2 and have never been told amnio was mandatory.

I'm 25 and I just had a test for Down's syndrome yesterday, but not through an amnio. It was an ultrasound to measure the fluid on the back of the baby's neck, as well as blood work that should come back in 7 to 10 days. It's completely optional, and it must be pretty new because it wasn't offered with my son and he's 6. It's done between 12 and 14 weeks in case the mother decides not to continue with the pregnancy, but if the mother would continue the pregnancy either way, it's not a necessary test to have done.

Did you have the bloodwork that is routine at 16 weeks. The triple screen test? One of the factors that it tests for is downs. If the test came back high for Down's syndrome, that would be the only reason that I could see for doing the test.
What is your doctor saying? Have you been given any information? There is a percentage of people what miscarry when having the amnio done, but I do not know of the percentage.
Best of luck to you and your family.

I had blood work that came back abnormal. They sent me to a high risk OB doc and they did ultrasounds and still believed that my baby had down's syndrome. They suggested I get the Amnio and so I did. That was the most horrible 2 weeks of my life waiting for the results. Even though the doctors were like 80 percent sure my baby had downs....the amnio test came back totally normal. Hope this helps.

It's not necessary unless you are 35 or if you are 30 and have never had any children. It's dangerous.

I had the "triple screen" blood test done. But it came back negative... so no amnio.
