Use a start-up disk. That will bypass the password.

Hello nola_cajun,

This is not a problem. Tell your boyfriend to just use the disk number one of his copy of Mac OS X.

Put the CD (or DVD if it's Tiger disk) into his Mac turn off the Mac.

Boot-up the Mac while holding down the C key. This causes the Mac to boot-up from the disk rather than his hard drive.

Instead of re-installing the OS, you go up to the menu. There is a menu command for changing the administrative password. After saving the new password, reboot without holding any key this time. The Mac should boot up regular this time.

Have him write down that password in several different places, so he doesn't lose it so easily this time. Best of luck.

Here's a guide on how to reset the administrator password. Your b/f will need his Mac OS X CD. If he lost it, call Apple and they'll ship a replacement.
