My grandmother used strips of old sheets, with pins.
They had a boiler in the house which was used to incinerate them. My mother used a belt & bought pads with loops which attached to it.
Sponges, moss, wool, any absorbent materials, were all used in early & rural societies.
AFAIK, ancient Egyptians used papyrus tampons.

Back in the old days, they used rags. That's where the term "she's on the rag" came from.

pieces of cloth, sponges, moss, etc.
In ancient Egypt, not only was clothe used, but men generally did that washing and it was considered an honour.
In some cultures, nothing was used.
