Braxton Hicks aren't painless. They're not like "transition" pains, but they aren't painless. They are more of an all over tightening, a general squeezing.

You didn't mention how far along you are. NOT that that would make much difference... I had B-H contractions from day one with my second the third kids.. *LOL*

The ONLY way you can tell? Time them. Real labor is relentless.. no changes in time, except less of it between hits...

How far along are you? They may be braxton hicks even if you are feeling them in your back. I had back labor so I felt all of my contractions in my back. Take a warm shower or back and they should go away. If they come back within 20 minutes then you are more than likely beginning labor contractions and you should start timing them and keeping track. The one thing about back labor is the pain never really goes away between contractions as does the pain with "normal" contractions. You will have an intense 20-30 seconds and then a dull ache in between which can be confused as just back pain. Good luck!

I had Braxton-Hicks for months.... some of them were strong enough that I had to stop what I was doing and breathe through them. They say that real contractions start in your back and wrap around to the sides to the front. If they become more rythmic, and more intense... it may be the real thing.

my b/h contractions are more uncomfortable than anything else (in fact i'm having one now!) but they are a tightening feeling its just your body getting ready for the big day
