I was driving a truck when traffic was stopped for an accident going the other way on the expressway. By the time I got up to it I looked over the little median wall while the EMS people were "pouring" some unlucky soul into a body bag. I kinda trained myself not to look at accidents anymore.

Not exactly. The staring is trying to find any part of it that I might be able to help get better. Like someone standing there with tears streaming down her face who obviously needs a big, long hug and compassion and maybe a telephone call or a blanket, &c. When I stare, it is that I am surveying the site to see where I can help out. I do not treat things like that as a spectator event, no. God forbid. Ugh.

I don't stop and stare but I do look. I can't stand people that slow down and almost cause an accident themselves. A quick glance just to see what's going on is enough for me.

yes always :
One time the highway was blocked by a huge accident.
I diverted in a small side-lane overlooking the accident (it was a big lorry with several crashed cars).
But others had the same idea as me, so I could not stop; I had to turn back at the next roundabout 2 times.
At least I stopped to shoot pics (for me), but a witness insulted me.
I felt angry after so much efforts, but I preferred to piss off; he was certainly angry too.

I totally agree with chaos..It is human nature to stare at these things. It's natural, part of our defence system. It acts as a deterent for us..It wakes us up to the dangers of life...Now if you enjoy the pain or suffering of the injured person then that's a different story!

Anyone who says they don't look is lying. It's natural to look. There really is no reason to STOP though unless you have a skill you can offer, whether that be first aid or something.

Well, as much as I hate to admit it yes I do. But a well known fact is that Atlanta is the rubberneck capital of the country.
