install Google Toolbar as it comes with its own popup blocker which is really reliable. http://toolbar.google.com/T4/intl/en-GB/index_xp.html is the link. You will still get the beep each time but those popups will disappear. Youc an also download IE 6 which I bleieve also comes with a popup blocker. The Yahoo toolbar may also come with one so you can have them all enabled. My PC is popup free! Wonderful!

You might want to download some free utlities as well to remove spyware from your PC. I am assuming you run a firewall on your PC as this is critical when you have broadband although XP has this built in but it only proects you one way only. Vista is both ways. The reason I say this is that a lot of Spyware programs detect sites you visit and then display popups. I always remove temp Internet files cached locally as well to cover my tracks and stuff. Some utulities do this automatically for you. Hope this helps

It depends on the pop ups. Try sitting your computer behind a nat firewall. Your most likely getting windows messenger spammed. Otherwise your computer is infected with spyware, which defeats the pop up blocker's purpose.

get spybot search and destroy and ad-aware se personal (both avail. from download.com)
run both then restart in 'safe mode' and run both again.
ps in future if you recieve a message in notification area DO NOT click it.
pps some p2p sites will bundle pop up software as part of the program. nothing is free. ever.
programs such as 'botspy' and 'virusburst' are not real programs if u have either of these run the suggested programs then steer clear of the type of sites u have been surfing. u know what i mean. by the way do not disable safe-search on ur internet search engine thats prob why u are asking for help in the first place.believe me i know!!
ppps hope u still have a life when all this is fixt lol.

HI, try getting yourself an anti-spyware program and run it. Pop-ups could be triggered by spyware running in your system.

Here are the following software that you're going to need to prevent spyware/pop-ups. (ok, ok, that's only my suggestion, but at least, these programs are free! Just Download, Install and Run Them!)

AVG 7.5 Free Edition (Anti-Virus) http://www.avg.com
Spybot Search and Destroy (Anti-Spyware) http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
CCleaner (Registry Cleaner) www.ccleaner.com

And also, try using Firefox 2 browser over Internet Explorer.

open a command prompt (Start->Run:cmd) and type:

net stop messenger

If this stops the popups, disable Messenger in your services. Right-click your "My Computer" icon and choose "Manage"
At the bottom, expand "Services and Applications" and select "Services"
Scroll down to "messenger" and double-click it.
Select startup type: Disabled in the middle. Hit the "Stop" button and then OK.

This tells you that you have two problems:

1) you are not behind a firewall. get one. NOW! Do not pass go, do not collect $200. NOW! Zone Alarm is about the best free option you can get.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

2) YOU ARE NOT BEHIND A FIREWALL! get one! See point number one. repeat until a firewall is installed.

If this des not stop the popups, you have a spyware infection. Install and run Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1
and Ad-Aware SE:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1
and AVG's 2 products AVGAS and AVGAV
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_432a904.exe
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avgas-setup-7.5.0.50.exe

Update them all immediately, then scan with all. I suggest AVGAV, then Ad-Aware, then Spybot, then AVGAS.

It may take several cycles to clean it all out.

If you still have issues, you need a detailed cleaning. take it to a computer shop, you are too badly infected to resolve yourself.

Try deleting your cookies and temporary internet files as well as trying ad-aware and spybot.

On internet browser click on tools, then internet options, then on privacy tab. On that part at the bottom there is a pop up blocker enable that if you havent done so already.

Hackers or spyware programs tend to use these techniques to try to get you to download additional rogue software. I suggest you download AdAware (Free) which can do a scan of your computer and remove the spyware. Do you have anti virus software?
