What do you think about today's main manifestations of African American music?

I mean, don't take me wrong but most of today's African American artists are not a whole lot compared to their antecedents.

Great artists like Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklyn and others will be remembered for a long time for their brilliant art.

But the Moneymaker song and others don't strike me as masterpiece.

I am a great fan of African American culture and I admire the hip hop movement but it seems that the movement got lost on mid 90's and everything started to be about selling drugs, a*s and more drugs.

What about today's main manifestations of white American music? Great artists like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Bob Dylan will be remembered for a long time for their brilliant art.

But Brittney Spears and Lindsey Lohan don't strike me as anything special.

I am a great fan of revolutionary American bands of decades past, but it seems these days white American musicians just sell and sing about sex, partying, fashion, and drugs.

You posted a stupid question! All of pop culture today sucks...not just African American artists!

I'm not a big fan of hip hop or r and b, which are performed mostly by black artists, but I do like many rock and metal groups that are partly or wholly black-artist. So it's not that black musicians aren't doing anything worthwhile these days, just that I don't like 'pop' music, period.

I wish it was less materialist. There is alot of talented people out there, but if they would put their efforts into positive things, I believe rap and hip hop would be even better.
