Between my wife and me, we've owned 6 PDAs since 1999. Here's a summary:

Palm IIIx - This would be a step backwards from what you have now, but this was a superb little device. It survived a trip through the washing machine and just needed new batteries.

Clie S320 - Feature-wise, this would be on par with your M500. I liked it, no problems.

Clie SJ20 - My wife's Palm. She got it Christmas of 2002 and still uses it. Double the memory of the S320 and a high res. screen to boot. (Also consider the SJ22, identical to this one but with a color screen)

Clie TJ25 - I got this to replace the S320 because I had a replacement plan that was about to expire (there was nothing wrong with the S320). I didn't like this one much. The flip cover didn't stay on and the alarms weren't loud enough. The screen was dim and the form factor wasn't too good.

Palm Zire 72 - Got this to replace the TJ25 (While kicking myself for not just keeping the S320 to begin with). Lots of features, color screen, MP3s, big internal memory, but the SD card slot stopped working after about a year and a half. Also, didn't have a flip-cover which meant I had to buy a case for it to avoid getting scratched up in my pocket. The SD card slot was an important enough feature for me that I decided to move on...

Palm Tungsten T5 - The palm I own and use today. I like this device very much. It has more than enough memory, a flip cover, and performs quite well. No complaints.

All of the above devices have been discontinued, but you can probably find them on sites like eBay without much trouble.

A note about freezing on Palm devices - in my experience, freezes are usually because of conflicts between 3rd party software, and not anything wrong with the Palm itself. Either of Palm's lower-end devices that they're selling now (The Z22 or Tungsten E2) would probably suit your needs for reliability and simplicity. Also the Treo phones are a good option if you want to combine your cell phone with your PDA, but they're quite a bit more expensive.

I hope this is helpful!

I would say the Tungsten E (or E2) or Z22 depending upon what you need. I strongly recommend the E, because all newer palms freeze for the same reason: applications don't really like the new separate RAM and program storage (flash) memory all newer palms have.

To solve this, load the programs that crash onto the SD card.

Oh, and if you use LJP, it's experimental and generates strain on your Palm's CPU, so it always crashes, but doesn't cause reboot loops.

I have a Palm Tungsten E and I love it. It hasn't given me any trouble so far.
