Okay, here is the legend(s) behind Valentine's Day.

The History of Saint Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270.

If Valentine was marrying couples due to all marriages and engagements being canceled, it may have been illegal but that didn't make it WRONG. You need to get your facts strait. You sound like a bitter, "V-day is for couples only" kind of person. And I can't blame you for that as I used to be one of those people also until I met my boyfriend, but I didn't go online and publicly criticize a holiday that many many people still enjoy. Valentine's day is not actually thought about for it's history and it's legend anyway. People celebrate it for the romance in the day, it's an excuse to be even sweeter and more loving to the one you love. Valentine's day is about LOVE, so chill out and enjoy the day or sulk about it. Your choice.

Best of luck to you in finding love and being a little softer hearted.
God bless!

P.S. Love is more than "series of electro-chemical reactions inside your brain". Anyone who says that is using it as an excuse to feel sorry for themselves because they are single. Trust me, I had enough self-pity parties of my own to know what I'm talking about.

Personally I think that it is a Hallmark/American Greetings holiday.......However if you don't observe it with your significant other then you should consider your options like,no affection from her, and also the possibility of someone else stealing her from you! My true advice is don't be a cheap b@st@r*, and go get her something. If you love her now is your chance to show it. Good Luck!!

You are reading far too much into it and taking it way too seriously. It's a fun holiday so relax and enjoy it. If it was meant to be serious we would get the day off.

For me, it means a lot more when my boyfriend does sweet things for me out of the blue than when he does it because some ridiculous holiday dictates it. If other people like it, that's great for them. For me, it just feels like a sham.
