A good colonial advantage during the Revolutionary War was location. The location of the War was in the colonies. Anyone fighting against the British knew the area. They knew the best places to hide. Another advantage was the style of fighting. The British fought in the European style of approaching in lines. The Americans fight Indian style - hiding behind trees and bushes. The Americans learned this style from the Indians during the French and Indian War.

Unconventional warfare was a plus for the Colonials. Most had been involved in Indian campaigns and were used to living off the land, fighting from ambush, using hit & run guerilla tactics, and harassing the enemy through knowledge of the country. Ethan Allen and Francis Marion come to mind first. These tactics allowed a far lesser number of Colonials to keep numerous British Army units confused and at bay. The British were used to fighting in lines and marching into battle.

The colonists had very good leaders with very good tactics. For example, the green mountain boys took control an entire british fort with only a small militia. And how Washington killed the Hessian mercenaries at Christmas, when they were all drunk from partying. Spies also played an important part in gathering information.

A good advantage is the colonists now were to go if they get lost. A bad advantage is for the British because if they get lost they have no idea where they are.
