I presume that you personally are pro same-sex marriage, otherwise it'd be silly to chose that as a topic. Anyway, there's a huge debate on this issue because some people say that same-sex marriage is wrong and expressly forbidden by the Bible. Some reasons why it should be legal are the fact that every American should have equal rights to marry regardless of their sexual preferences. Also, marriage would grant stability to same-sex couples. They would be allowed to adopt, share health insurance through one partner's work, and receive death benefits. It might also help stem the spread of HIV and other STDs in America, because the relationships would presumably be more stable and long-lasting.
I hope I helped with your speech. Good luck!

If I was writing this paper I'd start from the perspective that same-sex marriage was legal until some bigots in certain states decided to make laws against it. Having said that, if there's no federal prohibition against it, states can't make a law against it. Let's say you marry your girlfriend in Vermont then move to Texas. Are you still married if Texas doesn't recognize your marriage? Do you need a divorce then if you decide to marry a guy? Maybe you can in Texas, but what would Vermont think? How would you do you your taxes?
There needs to be Federal Legislation recognizing same-sex marriage and all states need to abide by it no matter how red their necks are.

The only arguments that I have even seen against it are related to a religious core and that violates the separation of church and state........same sex couples should be entitle to the same rights as anyone else. There are various practical reasons..... There are still alot of insurers that require marriage to be covered on the same policy. Tax purposes, estates, health care decisions, adoption, and parenting..........alot of the same reasons that people of the opposite sex want to marry.

I have a sister who is gay and she and her partner have been together for over 13 years...there are some good reasons as to why I would be Pro same sex marriage...this issue usually falls in the category of "RIGHTS"... not immoral or moral...
* no matter who you are, you are human...all humans have rights.
* If you're like my sister and her partner and work...you pay taxes.
* you have the right to vote...
* you have the right to buy a home and maybe some land.
* you have the right to drive a car just like any other...
* you have the right to date whom you'd want to as an adult...
* you have the right to go the same grocery store as any other...
* you have the right to adopt children providing you meet the minimum requirements...such finances, home, location, etc.
* as a human you have so many rights to equality in work, home, society.
With these as just a few....mostly "rights" issues they are...
wouldn't choice of whom to join in marriage be a right too?
I remember when I was a child/teenager, that interracial relationships had the same issues when it came to marriage. It used to be thought of as immoral, but now that is behind...but wouldn't most anyone think that gays have the same rights if they pay taxes, own a home, and they're already allowed to adopt children (for about 20+yrs now)...there are some that go to church, contribute to their community, etc., that they should have the right to marry who they damn well please? I would think so...just too many hypocrites in this world today and always will be. Why if a black and white couple can get married, why shouldn't the gay couple be allowed the same right?
hope this gives you a little more insight on what you need to think about for your speech....good luck!

Well there are a lot of reasons.
First of all, marriage is about commitment, not gender.
Secondly, Marriage is a RELIGIOUS ceremony and the government shouldn't be allowed to interfere with churches/religion. I think it should be up to the churches to decide wether or not they wish to perform gay marriages.
third, Gays are going to be gay, no matter what the law is.
4th, By not letting Gays marry they're only causing MORE sin because the gays are performing sexual acts before marriage. (if you believe that's a sin anyways) Gay sex is going to be performed no matter what, why prevent it from being done within marriage so as to prevent more sin?
you can also find some neat little slogans on myspace.com/isupport
Good luck on your paper!

Well, it shouldn't be illegal because if a same sex marriage occurs, why would it bother the goverment? is it really important to them? i don't understand why people think same sex marriages are so wrong. two people love each other. they should be able to get married just like every other couple.

Two guys should be able to commit their lives to each other. Marriage however, is for the procreation of children within a stable environment; ideally a man and a woman. However, attitudes are changing and adoption may soon be an option for gays in a stable relationship.

So what if it's 'disgusting' to you?Do you run your decision by your closed emotional perspective on things?
As long as the marriage isnt Christian then im for it.
If heterosexuals can be married, why not homosexuals?Just cuz they cant breeed?!
It's a symbol of love and a promise to be faithful to the one you love. Why cant gays share that promise too?

Because tax laws are used to encourage certain things and discourage others. It is not the job of the government to legislate or discourage morality. If there is ANY logic to the laws that protect a spouse in case of divorce or give tax breaks to joint households then they apply whether you Stand or squat when you pee.
