by applying varying pressure to the pencil you will be able to get a variety of shades. you can also use different lead pencils (i.e. 2B, 4B, 6B) to get different effects as well.
there are also a variety of methods for shading
stipple (shading using dots), hatching (chris-crossing lines), or just using the method I described above which is probably the most common

lightly hold your pencil parallel to the paper, and shade with the side of the lead. you can also use tissue paper or a paper stub (found at many art supply stores) and gently rub the shaded parts....this gives it a less harsh, smooth effect. another technique uses a cross-hatch effect. you can achieve this look by making straight lines that either get closer or further apart making the shading more and less intense. criss-cross these lines to emphasise dark shades. shading can bring any drawing to life...... practice makes perfect!

You could use alot of pressure for the outlines of the drawing, and when you want to shade, just use your finger and smudge from the line inward, just keep repeating until you get the kind of shading you want. If you want more shade, just go over the outline of the part you want to have more shading and smudge again, and keep repeating as necessary.

you can use various pressures, or if you're using a pen, you space them close togther for dark areas and gradually space them out as you get closer to the lighter areas
