Because my daughters heartrate dropped suddenly, I had an episiotomy. I am talking from "there to there". The whole way. I did not feel ANYTHING when it was being done. I did have an epidural. I agree that, and believe it or not, it is better to tear then to be cut. It heals faster and with less scar tissue. DO KEGELS.
It helps to prevent the chance of tearing. With that said, my recovery was not bad at all. You are very sore regardless after childbirth. I was afraid to take my first BM, but again it wasn't horrible. If you tear or get an episiotomy, they will give you a squirt bottle for cleaning. DO NOT forget to take it with you. It will be your friend for a week. Nice warm water. The hospital also, regardless, will most likely give you maxipads that you "pop" to get cold. Like a cold pack. Use them and take all the extras too. I think they told me to use them for the 1st 24 hours. I used them for 3 days. It honestly was not that bad. You are so much more focused on your new baby and everything that somes with it. This is something you do not need to worry about. Really. Good luck

I think you will have pain in your crotch regardless of whether or not you have an episiotomy. I had a homebirth - so no medical pain relief at all. I had a 2nd degree tear - with stitches. Even if you don't tear or have an incision, having your vagina stretched enough for a baby to come out is going to take time to heal. There is a lot of swelling in the whole area. My baby is 15 months now - healing took longer than I thought it would but it was all worth it. I had a beautiful experience and I can't wait to do it again. Enjoy the experience.

That depends on your threshold of pain. For me, I was so stretched from the birth that the rest of that area was numb. I didn't feel a thing with the episiotomy. I also had done lamaize, which is a form of self hypnosis.
As for afterwards, it wasn't bad, but they do offer pain medication if you need it. Just take it slow.

The worst part of my episiotomy was the first time I poo'd afterwards. I was scared I was going to re-tear something, or some other nightmare scenario. The poo was super-hard too, the nurses and doctor told me that this was normal, but no one likes pooping a brick after having a baby.
The actual act of having the episiotomy was me going "wait, what?" right when the baby came out. It was so quick, it was over before I knew it. So it didn't really hurt (yay epidurals) to get one, but it helps to know that you could get one so you aren't all surprised when it happens like I was.

i don't know. i was really scared to take a dump. i was afraid the stitches would break. but it didn't. the pain isn't unbearable. b/c they give you are really strong pain killer. that you can't get over the counter. they gave me ibuprofen 800mg. good stuff. but after the pain killers were gone, it was uncomfortable to walk a long ways, such as from the parking lot to the store. you have to have sits bath or whatever it's called. were you sit in hot water to soak your stitches for about 20 minutes a day. it helps it heal.
that's all i had to go through. it probably sounds bad, but it could have been worse.

I didn't get an episiotomy, but I did get a small tear. Didn't even know I tore till they told me I needed stitches. Didn't really feel the stitches. But OH BOY the next day, it hurt to pee SO BAD.

I will be honest with you,the pain is horrible!!!! Right after delivery I didnt it feel it,I didnt even know that I was cut down there..A couple hours later the pain really kicked in,when u walk it burns really bad and hurts, when u pee is the worst..i would clench my teeth and grab onto my shirt or whatever i could reach for...It is a cut down in the woman area and sen with stitches,so u know it will be extremely painful...Using warm soaks (i liked them hot) and tucks helped a lot,the hospital also gave me some benzocaine spray for down there to numb the pain...either way though i could definitely feel it...it goes away in due time though...

An episiotomy should really be done if absolitely necessary, such as if there's a high risk of tearing during delivery. If the woman is under epidural, she won't feel anything until after the medication wears off. By then the discomfort shouldn't be too bad except when urinating, in which case squirting the area with warm salt water during urination can take some of the sting away.

It has been proven that epitome's actually assist a birth in less than 2% of the time they do it.
Before they do that to you, you should know WHY they want to do that! And, you should be brave enough to be incarge of the choices that are made during your birth experience.
No one can tell, not even you, where the bulk of the pressure is on your vagina. To cut you is unnecessary and invasive.
When your perinium (the tissue inside or around your vagina) is streched and/or manipulated during labor it loosens up that area. It is designed to strech!! But, if someone does that for you, you wont tear at all!!!
