you are not being unfair.
i don't think it matters what state you are in. any child should be home before sunset. which means, if the sun starts to set, you're late. that was the rule that my dad set on me. i'm in california as of right now also. if the sun starts to set at 5pm, make sure he's home before 5pm. that should be reasonable enough. b/c bad things tend to happen more often at night.

You do what is best for you and your son. They are not capable
of making that decision. And with things the way they are these
days, I hope that everyone holds thier kids closer. If you say
5pm, then 5pm it should be.. Hang in there! A 10 1/2
year old shouldn't be allowed to run free.

Good Luck

When he's out till 5 or 5:30 is he alone or with friends? I would be very uncomfortable letting my 10 year old wander around the streets without an adult. I think you are being really trusting to let him stay out till 5p.m. You are his mom so trust your gut feeling on this. If he is out at least make sure he is with friends. I don't think you are being unfair at all. Kids just don't realize how unsafe the streets are and how much more trouble they can get into.

He is 10, U are his mother. No u are not being unfair u r protecting Ur child. No matter how u try to explain this he isn't going to understand. My friend is going through the same thing with her ( just turned ) 11 yr old daughter. She thinks she knows everything and her Mother is wrong. Unfortunately most 10 yr olds and older think they know everything these days. My Mum would have killed me if i answered back lol.
Good luck with Ur son.

You are right there are alot of bad people in this world tell youre son this I am a 29 year old mother of 6 and we live in the suburbs now but i moved here about 2 years ago from cleveland. Not then nor now do my kids run free they are not allowed to walk around or hang out at the parks with their friends they are not even allowed to just hang out at friends houses all of there friends come here at least I know they are safe but i do allow them to do other things like go to the movies or skating but i drop them off and pick them up so let him know its for his own safty and no matter how mad he may get now he will thank you in the future and tell him it could be worse you could be like me. I wish that there were more parents like you. I volunteer with the Chicago Police Department and I feel that ALL kids need to really hear what their parents are telling them with respect to their environment. Pay a visit to your local Police Department, Juvenile Division. Ask them do they have any "stranger danger" materials that can be shown to kids in his age group.. I applaud you. Good Luck

Its not terrible, but a little early. How about a deal. He can stay "out" if he's really staying in at someones house. Somewhere your comfortable and you pick him up at a time you like, something a little later. I wouldnt think anything past 8pm,even on weekends.
