I've been to a lot of castles in many countries in Europe and not once did I see any with a moat. That's as much a cliche as the proverbial princess being held hostage in a castle tower by a dragon... it's almost completely a fairy tale. I imagine a very small handful of castles have ever had moats, but none of the ones I'ves seen. Most European castles took advantage of the natural landscape--such as isolated, easy-to-defend hilltops or bluffs, usually overlooking something strategic, such as a high-commerce river, or a city, or the entrance to a sea port. Rarely were they ever inhabited by kings--the sheer number of castles and castles ruins throughout Europe make that logistically impossible. Some were inhabited by royalty; most were built and inhabited by local nobility, and sometimes even robber barons, such as in the castles over the Rhein River in Germany. Castles are extremely interesting and each has centuries of stories to tell, but not along the lines of your standard bedtime fairy tales.

No i dont believe so..... Unless i am mistaken, motes were usually man made when a castle was made to protect the castle, and only have one way in (drawbridge). SO anything in there would have had to be put there, and no, i dont think there was crocodiles or fish unless they craweled there on their own lol, despit common representation in movies.
