Let c = connie, a = cousin

c + a = 45
c = 2/3a

so by substitution
2/3a + a = 45
5/3 a =45
a = 27, so c = 18

Let c = her cousin's age . The Connie's age is 2/3 c

c + 2/3 c = 45

Change c to 3/3 c so you can add it to 2/3 c

5/3 c = 45

Now divide both sides by 5/3, which is like multiplying by 3/5

That will give you c. Then subtract that from 45 to get Connie's age.

well you would use this:

2/3x for connie age
x for her cousins age.

2/3x + x = 45
combine like terms.
1 1/3x + 45
divide
x = 27

so connie's cousin is 27 years old, and connie is 2/3 her age.
we would plug the 27 in for x.
2/3(27) = connie's age.

connie is 18, and her cousin is 27.

Connie is 2/3 as old as her cousin. Therefore, connie = 2/3X where X is connie's cousin.

X + 2/3X = 45

5/3X = 45

5X = 135

X = 27

Connie is 18, her cousin is 27.
