so i am trying to learn how to program. The only background I have is Visual Basic and it seems like a freaking joke. I am taking this class at my school an im in my second semester and I swear I know more than my teacher. But anyway, what REAL language should I look into?

There's nothing wrong with VB. Lots of applications and front ends are written with it. But, if you want something with more glamour and that pays better, then Java, or C# or C++ are the languages to learn.

Well it depends where you will be working at. But for more portability you can try something like Java or C++. I will go with Java since the as a right now seems like everything is migrating some how that way. and is open source.

Java and C++ is used in web programming.

VB is a very good program. Not only can you use it to write standalone windows executables, but you can write it into webpage (.asp).
