If you are using a printer with cartridges that include print heads (HP/Lexmark/Dell) then no a refurbished cartridge will not damage the printer, if a clog occurs it will just ruin the cartridge itself. Be a little more weary with canon/epson and brother cartridges, and inferior cartridge can clog the print heads in your printer and cause serious damage. Only purchase from a reputable dealer, make sure they give a 100% satisfaction guarantee on the product, and make sure there are no limitations (I have run into the 100% guarantee with a no refund on open box policy which is just silly).

You should have no problems if you buy from a good place.

Ink cartridge refurbished by reputable companies and sold by reputable stores shouldn't give you problems. Any amateurish ink refill will result in the cartridge releasing all the ink into the innards of your printer.

If the ink used in the refurbished cartridge is inferior it can seriously clog or run. As Bill M says, you need a reputable supplier. Try http://www.ink4printer.com. They guarantee their low price and your satisfaction. I've used them and had no problems with the cartridges.
