I've looked on amazon, I've done searches and I can't find the Original (the dark and morbid) version of the tales. All that I get is the newer child versions.

Look for the Complete Tales. Jack Zipes has edited one, I believe, and he's a well-known fairy tale scholar, looking at motifs and underlying themes. He wouldn't sugar-coat.

Just checked amazon. Try The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales published Pantheon, ISBN-13: 978-0394709307.

If you read the reviews under it, you'll see several comment on the dark themes and violence in these original versions.

I would recommend "The Annotated Brothers Grimm" edited by Maria Tartar.

I own a copy of this book, which came out in 2004 and is readily available. The book includes all the published Brothers Grimm stories - both the children's ones and the "darker" ones meant for adults (which are clearly marked and get their own section.)

The book has an introduction by AS Byatt, notes on and beautiful illustrations accompanying all the stories, and a fresh new translation of the tales.

It shouldn't be too hard to find as it is pretty recent. I got my copy at Strand bookstore in New York last year, which has lots of quality art and lit books at discount prices. I'm sure the book is on amazon and they probably have it at powells.com as well. I would also imagine any quality independent bookstore in your area either has it or can put it on order for you.

I put a link to a short review of the book below - discusses the detail and the inclusion of the "adult" stories that you're interested in. I love this book, I think it's a wonderful resource.

Look for "The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm" translated and with an introduction by Jack Zipes. ISBN 0-553-37101-0.
Or for "Grimms' Tales for Young and Old: The Complete Stories" translated by Ralph Manheim. ISBN 0385189508.

I don't know if this helps at all but your probably searching in areas at are too main stream i woul tend to look more at rare and antique bookstores or places that sell collectibles. I dare say that would be your best bet. Hope this helps :)

Look in old bookstores, or even the Goodwill. They have tons.
