The opium poppy is distinct variety different from the ornamental varieties. The opium variety is also a taller plant than the one they grow for seeds. Every so often, I read in the papers the cops discovering the distinct purple and white blossomed opium poppy growing in a garden. The little old lady that was growing them had them for 20 years and never knew. The narcotica is present in all poppys but only commercially concentrated enough in the opium variety.

According to Mother Earth News, the poppy seeds that u buy in the spice section of the grocery store is the ones that can be processed into opium. Even tho it is legal to buy the seeds it is illegal to plant them. And besides very few people in the USA knows how to harvest the sap. My Mother In Law taught me the proess years ago. Never have tried it as of yet. Maybe after I retire.

It's legal, just change your address every 6 months, don't say too much on a cordless phone or on a cell phone, hide in the basement when you are not at work, take a different route to work every day, change your pants at least 8 times a week, wear a tie to work then remove the tie on the way home, keep a pair of sunglasses in your trunk, don't call collect, eat nothing but granola bars and yogurt, and you'll be ok.

Depends what country you are in. The USA laws are so convoluted it's hard to make sense of them. Currently it seems to be legal to sell the seeds, but illegal to grow them. I don't understand the logic, but I don't write laws.

I too have them in my garden. They are just beautiful, and that's why I have a few. I got the seed from a local gardener who sells plants. I asked her if I could buy one and she said "no, but I will give you a pod of seeds, as it would be illegal for me to sell them to you".

Sure it is. I have a garden full of them, and I haven't been busted yet. I would, however, discourage you from trying to use them for anything other than, say, poppyseed cake.
