I am new to central IN. I've been aware of this vole in my house for about a month and during that time we have lived peacably along side one another. Just now, I was sitting on the floor and all of a sudden I realize that my "buddy" is right against my hip. I like animals but I am freaked out. It acts as though it can not see but would it not smell me?

I will be getting some live traps to catch the mouse and then release it. It can live in the garage if it wants. For tonight, however, how do I stop this unwanted behavior? Do these guys climb at all?Any advice on what bait to use in the traps? Any particular "set up" that might keep this guy content in the garage? A little hay for nesting?

Hey, Grey, you seem to know a lot about voles. I guess they are also called "meadow mice" If they are not rodents what are they? Do you think the hay in the garage thing will work?

Go to your local lumber store ( lowes home depot) and they sell a device that puts out a sound wave that deters mice and roaches that plugs into a wall socket. This solved our mouse problem.

Voles In House

Moles/Voles are not rodents. They cannot surive more than a few hours without food. A "field mouse" is not a Vole, but a mouse.

Use a NO-KILL tray like a HavaHart. That is the responsible and humane way to catch and release. Some hardware stores rent NO-KILL traps.

Use peanut butter as bait to catch a MOUSE.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about voles. I do want to congratulate you, however, on showing kindness to the little guy! I don't know how big voles are, but I've had great success with this live trap for mice in my house:

http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266

It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):

https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=HP200

I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here (it should work fine for voles):

http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp

When I release mice in my woods, I do it in an area with some sheltering bushes and leave some bedding (torn-up paper towels) for them, along with some bird seed and oatmeal. If I don't release the mice over about a 1/2 mile from my house, they do come back. Unless you make it impossible for the vole to reenter your house by filling every single hole (mice can get through a hole of 1/4"), chances are he will come back inside. If you put out hay and food in your garage, you may be overrun soon with many creatures who appreciate your hospitality!

I'm sure the vole could smell you, but probably just wasn't bothered by the smell. I'm pretty sure they can climb.

Good luck to you. :)

It is easy to get rid of voles. Buy 2 live traps, the kind that are long and black and had the closing door mechanism. Put a little grass with the roots attached in each. Set them up close to where you saw the vole. Turn off the lights. It will only take about 10-20 minutes. It will climb inside and shut trapping it. You can take it outside and release it.

They're different species. The most common species of peridomestic (=living near or with humans) mouse is Mus musculus. This species was originally distributed (probably) in the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia, but now it occurs everywhere, since it has traveled wherever man has gone. Field mice are normally native to the areas where they are present. Since mice are the most diverse of mammals in terms of species, there's a huge diversity of field mice, voles, and similar rodents in most areas of the world (exceptions are Australia and neighboring islands, where there are no native placental mammals, and the poles). Many of these species are not easy to identify or distinguish at first sight, but they differ in their size, color, relative size of the ears and tail, as well as their preferred habitat, food, etc. However, actual determination (=assignation to a species) must be done by examining its skull and especially its teeth.

How To Kill A Vole

I think Voles are blind. We had them in Virginia. Only they were outside. You can set traps, but they go in the ground. I would suggest getting a cat. My cat's killed them left and right.
Good Luck!

You must really love animals to try and keep it alive. Just a warning though, they love to chew on things including electircal wire and all sorts of things that we have in our house. If I were you I would trap to kill.......there are a million voles to replace yours trust me. However if you are really wanting to keep him alive try some peanut butter on a cracker as live bait.....
