yes they did, and yes it works if used wisely.
You basically ask prisoner about things that you know every once in a while, and punish them if they lie. Since prisoner does not know what you know, they have to tell the truth to avoid punishment.

Though the Government won't admit to it publicly, I'm certain that torture has been used by someone somwhere in order to get vital information. Torture can be very effective in getting the truth. If you scare or hurt someone enough you can get them to tell you almost anything.

I would assume so. When dealing with people who don't want to talk and say the truth, I think it is a very effective method of getting information.

They have not publicly disclosed this, but I am sure they have used these methods, and yes when employed correctly these can be used to produce answers.
