The essence of being an adult is accepting the responsibility of making your own moral choices, and the consequences that flow from them.
To allow others (family, church, government, whoever) to make your choices for you, or to blame others (environment, family, poverty, whatever) for the choices you've made, is childish. To refuse to accept the consequences of your choices on you and those around you is also childish.
The "pattern" of childish behavior is instilled in each of us at birth. The problem is, many don't grow out of it....

No one wants to be responsible when something goes wrong, for the same reason that everyone wants to be recognized when they do something right. It's human nature. I think if I didn't learn it from my siblings and parents, it probably came naturally. It's maturity and time that teach you to accept responsibility for your own actions. It can't be taught, because if a person isn't ready to do it, they'll merely defend themselves and shift blame further. It's just a problem with human nature just like selfishness and vanity that can only be overcome by the person that's afflicted.
