I need to resew some buttons on a coat, but I find that the regular sewing thread is cheap looking and doesn't look like it will hold well. And yes I've been sewing for years, but have never tried this. It's 100% cotton - so?

wooleyboo - I just don't want the buttons to fall off after I sew them - I don't expect anyone or care if anyone doesn't like what I do.

yes you can use embroidery thread in place of sewing thread. it's more durable anyway, just make sure you use 3 strands of the 6 strands at a time, instead of one

there is a few embroidery thread greater suitable and heavier then others, I even have sewed n with it while i can't locate something or could verify up with the thread the the producer used. i'd possibly never use stitching thread to stitch out a layout in my embroidery device.

I wouldn't recommend it. Embroidery floss is not as strong as sewing thread (which is usually a blend of cotton and polyester), so I would stick with the sewing thread.

Yes, it will work. If you want it to be easier to sew with and be stronger then you should wax it. You should actually wax all hand sewing thread to make it sew easier, helps to eliminate tangling. To set the wax run the iron over it, just cover it with paper towel so wax doesn't bleed through.

No. Just buy the same color thread as the button or coat. I mean, come on, anyone that grabs you and puts their face on your coat and says"you are a cheap thread user" is either drunk or mentally ill.
