It's a joke, an urban legend, a myth.

Webkinz is marketed toward younger children and if they created an evil killer to bump off kids' pets, don't you think the parents would all be calling customer service having a fit? It would be a public relations nightmare for the company. They would never purposely program a killer into the site and if someone was hacking in and destroying accounts, they'd take care of the security problem right away rather than dealing with the fall out.

If you think about it, it makes no sense. Ganz is in this to make money. Murdering furry little virtual pets is sick and twisted. Crying kiddies and angry mommies does not make a company money. How logical does that sound? Some teenage boy probably thought the site was stupid and made up the story to torment a younger sibling. Relax and forget about it.

As long as you keep your account information secret (don't share your password or secret code and don't divulge any personal info), your 'kinz should be perfectly safe.
