LoA doesn't mean you're giving up college. you leave your studies in a specified time(you have to declare the exact days/months/years) so that the university will not forfeit the units you're taking so you can continue taking them when you get back.

Do you mean for a student?

It's mostly used for someone who has a major illness or is sent on military duty. It means that your status as a student is put on hold until you return. It does not mean you give up college.

There have to be extenuating circumstances for it to happen though.

In the case of an instructor taking a leave of absence, the same situations usually apply. If an instructor does leave for a semester, that is called a sabbatical, and it is a completely different thing.

A leave of absence here would be one still considered a part of the college while not attending classes for a period of time. This is normally because of some sort of extreme circumstance like a prolonged illness or death. When the leave of absence is up, the student will resume taking classes without the hassle of having to go through any sort of readmitting paperwork, they can just register for classes. This is for an official leave of absence, if you decide to take time off because you feel like it, that's completly different.

It means that you have decided not to enroll for a particular semester(s) but you don't lose your matriculation status. Each college/university may have their own regulations for taking a leave of absence such as the reason for the leave, the length of the leave, etc. You should check with the registrar's office to see what their guidelines are and what is required in order to ask for a leave of absence.

A leave of absence usually means that you are leaving your studies for a set amount of time (one term, one year, etc.) but your position is guaranteed upon your return.

Most of the time it means who ever you work for will "hold" your job (without pay) for you until you can come back to work.
The company I work for will grant a L.O.A. for up to 1 year at a time with a max of 4 years, but that's not a rule.
How long a company will give you is up to "The Boss"

It is an old term for permission to take time off.

Leave is old English for granting permission as in "by your leave" a request to grant permission.
