some of the episodes I see he's there, then the next one, he's gone and it's the grand-dad and CJ living in the house?
And why did this change occur?

The actor playing the dad died, of a heart attack I think, in mid-series shooting. They had to make up for the void left in his place, and so cast CJ and Grandpa to make up for it. It's a shame that the two sets didn't overlap, CJ and Paul would have made a good double act. Apparantly there wasn't much need for the family to act when doing the next few scenes after Paul died, they just had to be grief-stricken...

The father on "8 Simple Rules". Died on the show. They did this because John Ritter, the actor who portrays the role of the father actually died that day on the set. He died of a heart attack. They replaced him with CJ and the grandfather.

John Ritter played the father and he tragically had a heart attack and died. They wrote it into the show and that is why they wrote the grandfather in. He came to help the family along with David Spade who played CJ.

he didn't die "that day on set" as someone else has said. he was ill whilst filming so he went to a hospital where he died. then the show went on a break for a while and thats when CJ and Jim came in to support Cate as they had to write John Ritter's character out of the show.

Between season 1 and 2...John Ritter died unfortunately...they said on the show that he had a heart attack while shopping at the supermarket.

That was John Ritter from Threes Company......he died suddenly a few yrs ago. I forget what they call it, but it was something to do with his heart.

The father was played by John Ritter. He died suddenly (I think he had a tear in his aorta??), so that's why he wasn't on the show anymore.

They had a bi of a kerfuffle in the house he went out to buy something and got run over and died,hence the entrance of james garner and david spade
