A friend and I got ourselves motor scooters last year. She says that when a car wants to pass us, we should slow down, get into a single row, and let them pass. I feel like we should get into a single row, keep the same speed, and let them pass. Who is right.

is this scooter a 50cc or 1 of those 600cc silverwings? if its a silverwing, its capable of interstate speeds. even the 50cc scoots will get at least to 45 mph, and in curvey roads, only idiot cagers will try to push it more than that.
u dont say where u are either. in the states, scooters are afforded the same rights as cagers. scooters should use the same formations as regular street bikes. staggered formation for usual street riding, including in city traffic if the flow allows. in this formation, the bikes are in pairs: 1 bike is near the curb line, the other bike is near the center...and all the bikes in the pack ride in this fashion. spacing should be 2 bike lengths between each pair.
in the twisties, the safest formation is single file; all bikes in a single row. some clubs will maintain staggered formation even in the twisties tho these clubs would probably be rare.

as far as cager's passing, for me, they pass me at their own risk in the twisties. i wont speed up, but i wont slow down either. in a pack, ur safer sticking together in staggered formation...this makes the pack appear to be quite large vs a single bike.

In most states, scooters are considered to be motorcycles. Therefore, you have all of the rights as cars.

The best thing to do is to be predictable. Keep the same speed and let them pass.

You might want to rethink riding a scooter on a road where you cannot keep up with traffic. There are a lot of crazies out there who will get upset when you make them wait 15 seconds to pass.

I count 5 good answers so far. And Shut up! should do just that. Car lane, my eye. Where are the trucks and the rest of us supposed to drive? What your friend says applies to Bicycles. Here, motor scooters are classed as motorcycles and you must have a motorcycle license to ride one. The only road they are not allowed on here is the Interstate. You have the SAME rights and responsibilities as any other motor vehicle. Although we are allowed to ride two abreast, the stagger formation is preferred. Especially for large groups. Where is here? NH.

If your scooter has a license plate on it you are entitled to the whole lane ,same as a car. Using the far right is inviting someone to cut you off or try and pass when another vehicle is approaching

Maintain your positions and speed. You have every right to be on the road, whether you are on a scooter or motorcycle, as a car does. And as stated above, riding positions should be staggered. Look over a motorcycle training manual for correct details.

Just remember to ride defensively!

you should be staggered in your lane, and the person in the left part of the lane should be ahead. that way, when the car is passing you, they wont have a tendency to cut you off when they are merging back into your lane. slowing down is helpful if there is on coming traffic or an intersection ahead. otherwise you can maintain the same speed.

Simply stay at the speed of the road and stay in the middle of your side. You have the right to be on the road, so if they want to overtake you, they must pass around, not force you to the side of the road. It's also safer for you there in the middle because other drivers can see you. Good luck and stay safe.

You are right you don't have to slow down just let the impatient people pass, and you are doing the correct thing in pulling into single file , i wish they would all do that

i could say you're allowed the entire lane in which you're driving, they might desire to bypass whilst that's risk-free to realize this. yet whilst they're like maximum drivers now a days, they could quite run you over than decelerate. i could say you're good, why decelerate? They probable will run you over for slowing down!! i genuinely love the courteousness of drivers that only can no longer stand being in the back of absolutely everyone. Will do despite it takes to be in front at any value!!

It is actually much safer if you slow down when you being overtaken by a vehicle. The vehicle will get by you faster, therefore minimizing the time to pass. Also, you will be less likely to lose control with wind changes as the car goes by if you are at a slower speed.
