John Brown was a Famous abolitionist and Preacher in the period before the civil war ..escaped slaves had a bounty placed on their capture and return to servitude. the missouri compromise did nothing to stop border raids by pro- and con slavery ruffians ,...P.T Barnumwas an entrepeneur in shows and museums of the odd in washington before the war..to carry goods and people west to live and to trade the roads needed the proper type of grade and to be prepared for the weight of conestoga wagons .. Congress tryed to negotiate with the factions for secession before the attack on Fort Sumpter.the bounty for an escaped slave could be considered a form of ransom for the personal property of the slave owners.some of the raids in the western states where not about the slavery question but acts of vengence against their slave or non-slave holding neighbors. huge numbers of veterans fron the war between the states came home crippled of maimed and missing limbs because of advances in weaponrylike the minie ball for rifles..declaring themselves nuetral didnt keep the border states of kentucky and the new anti-slave state west Virginia out of the fighting and distruction. there im a civil war buff and 50 years old
