I would have to say they are both at fault. The dad for not taking time from his busy schedule to spend with his son, and the son for growing up just like him.He should have done differently so that he could have been a better dad to his kids.

That's like saying I'm an alcoholic because my dad is. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I would say that the dad could have broken the cycle. But who knows the reason why the dad worked like he did. Maybe he didn't think that he had what it took to be a dad because his dad didn't ever do things with him. Some where along the line was probably an abusive father or an absent father. So the boys never learned what it was like to be a dad or probably a husband either. Even if that was the case, that is what the Bible is for, it teaches men how to be fathers and husbands. Some where faith was substituted with making a living, doing it on your own.

I don't think anyone's really at fault, it's just the way things happen in life, sometimes. Yes, it's sad that the dad didn't spend enough time with his kid. Yes, the kid doesn't forgive his father for letting him grow up that way. But in the end, I don't think it's anyone's fault. I don't think it's fair to decide who was wrong or right based on four snapshots of the guy's life. Keep in mind that it's based on a letter his wife wrote him while he was away.

By the way, you should listen to more Harry Chapin. His music is brillliant and very well thought out. I recomend his album Varsities and Balderdash, where "Cats in the Cradle" is from.

The dad. Good song #1 hit from December 1974.

Both and neither at the same time. The song is about life and how it gets in the way of what we want. There's always a price to be paid and a lot of times that price is time. It's just a sad truth.

The son just followed the pattern set by the father. They both need therapy to avoid passing on the behavior to yet another generation.

The dad obviously. He raised his son that way. The son didn't do anything wrong.
