It has two answers.

"One hundred taken away by a number squared"---> 100-x^2
"gives us seventy-five"---> =75

Your equation is 100-x^2=75. Can you take it from there? Remember that there are two solutions.

25=x^2
x= 5 or -5

to solve it you would do:
x(squared)=75+100
x(squared)=175
X=positive or negative (square root)175 or 13.23
