Depression can be situational. It can also be due to brain chemistry. So it can be either.

The mind, body and spirit are all one system. But the mind is stronger than the body, so you can feel feelings such as happy or sad or angry or peaceful regardless of what is happening to/in the body, whereas over time the body WILL reflect the prevailing trends in your mind.
So 'depression' has to start in the mind. It can end there too -- you can think and/or feel your way out by feeding your mind positive affirmations (thoughts) and by consciously living with a positive attitude and a sense of self-worth. You can learn to consciously notice the 'good' feelings, the ones you like, and appreciate yourself with them when they arise. You can live as if you believe in yourself even before you really do.
But of course there are physiological signs of depression such as serotonin and endorphins, and the scientists can measure them, and the drug industry can create prescription drugs that suppress them (antidepressants), with measurable and (not entirely predictable for any individual) mood-relieving results.... and other less wanted results such as sleep disruption.

Depression is psychological and makes a person feel sad, hopeless, worthless, pessimistic and guilty. Often the sufferer has difficulty concentrating and making decisions, has a loss of appetite and weight or a weight gain, has difficulty sleeping, has a lack of energy and sometimes physical symptoms such as slow movement and speech. Depression must be taken seriously because of the high rate of suicide associated with it.

Psychology=study of the mind...Physiology=facet of biology pertaining to the function of living things. It is my opinion that depression is psychological. For it to be physiological would mean that it is a facet of the ordinary existence of every living thing. I sure hope that every living thing doesn't have to endure such a catastrophic mindset.

It could be caused by Both but I think Clinical Depression is more physiological, an imbalance of Seratonin in the brain.
