Actually back in the controlled environment years not only Whites lets the whip fly and were called crackers the slave owners very often took one of his favorite slaves and made him an over seer. And they were the whip bearers the slaves feard most.

That started with slaves who heard the "cracks" of their masters' whips on their backs when they were being whipped for doing something wrong. (ie. Slacking off, etc.) As someone else has already mentioned, I'm slightly amazed that it is an insult. (In a few ways, it was the slaves’ slang for the word “master“.)
