What requirements does an album have to have to be considered EP? What does EP even mean?

Length of play time and track numbers. An album has 7+ while an EP has 5-

Here my opinion :
EP is stand for "Extended Play".
And if we say about ep then we have to say the other type so you can understand.
Beside ep the are :
single - in this format usually we will find one until 3 songs only.

LP = long play, in this fromat usually we will find 8 until 10 songs in one lp.

and between of those 2 format we will find what we say EP,
and EP usually have more than 3 songs but less then 8 songs. So the ep is the format that just have 4 until 7 songs.

EPs are not as long as albums and are mostly used to test the reaction to a new band, to see if there any intrest in the band to make if worthwile to make a full album.

EP = mini version of Full album (LP)
usually contains no more than 5 songs

EP stands for "extended play" and is too short to qualify as an album, it is usually a "single" with a couple of extra songs as opposed to an LP "long play" album.
