My husband and I was wanted to start on online business. (And no it's not a porn website!) We would offer a serve online but charge people a monthly membership fee for using the website. We have already purchased a web domain name. I know that we need to talk with someone about creating a webpage for us but no one in our area does a real good job. (If you now of someone in the western N.C. area let me know) I know that we will have to set up something to accept credit card payments. I think a web designer can help us with that. But besides that I don't know what else we need to do. Do we need some kind of business license for this? I would like to hear from someone that can tell me how to go about this. Also the idea that we have has not been done before sure we talk to someone about getting it pat. so no one can steal our idea. Please help!

The first thing I would want to see from you is your business plan.
From the description you are giving us about your business, you appear to have limited knowledge of just what you need or are attempting to do.

This is a red flag to any potential investors.

Prior to launching any business from the conceptual stage to a live launch, you need to do some research and attain a better understanding of what your short term and long term requirements will be.

You may have the most dynamic product in the world, but if you have no plan, you will fail period.

If your business is is strictly an on line entity, there is more than producing a "web page" involved here. What seperates you from the 110 million web sites out there?

What do you know about SEO or SEM? What application are you using for your database? Do you have a server?

There are a great deal of questions you need to have answers on for your "IDEA"

You need to do some research on sites that are similar and have a stratigic plan in place prior to launching or you will go broke very fast.

As an example, a solid data base starts around $5,000.00.

Your web site will need to have a custom design so count on about $120.00 per page to start.

If you need a business license that depends on your State, County or the city you live in.

The list gets deeper and deeper, you need as I have stated to do some leg work and discover the answers for yourself.

If you choose to skip this step, hire someone to have everything done for you and expect to pay somewhere in the $50,000.00.
range for the expertise and set up.

The best thing you both can do is educate yourselves on what you need to do, then develope a business plan and set things in motion.

You can get a business license from city ahll for about $100 and you're all set.

Whoever is doing your hosting for less than $10 per month should have made software available to you so you can build your own website. If people are signing up all the time, it's going to need regular updates and you need to know how to do it. http://ewebsmith.com has a lot of information on this. You need to promote your website after you get it online.
