besides offering entertainment to audiences, what do theatres and acting offer to the community and city you live in?

It just shows the community what the local children are up to and for the kids to show off there skills

They have been known to attend charity events and appear in public service ads.
The theatres around my town ( http://www.calgary-city-maps.com/Calgary-live-theater.html )have sponsored community events from time to time as well.
