I was at a western horse show (poles and barrels) and I noticed that some of the people were wearing spurs and using them. They were the kind that stick out and sort of have a metal ball at the end. I'm not sure what they're called. But, I thought that spurs were illegal. Are they?

Spurs are not illegal. As long as they are used correctly, they do not harm the horse. Giant spiked spurs may be illegal, but the small post kinds or even the small wheel kinds are not.

Not at all. In fact, spurs are an excellent tool for the rider - particularly in shows. In equitation classes, judges watch the rider, rather than the horse. The rider who can cue his horse to go forward from a standstill with the slightest of body or leg movement will always win. The spurs are generally on the heel of the rider's boot so that they are very close to the animal's sides - but not touching. The rider then simply moves his heel inward rather than his whole leg to cue his horse to go.

Many performance horses are trained to back up - rather than go forward - when they feel the spur so that the cue is not pulling back on the reins. The horse backs up while the reins are obviously dangling loose. This is very impressive to the judge.

Unlike the comment from a previous responder, they are not for lazy horses and are not to make a horse go faster. They are a perfectly humane and legal way to cue a horse to do what he was trained to do.

Spurs are not used to harm or hurt the horse. They are used to tickle the horse to guide them. They are not illegal and are the tools with the reins and bit to guide the horse.

Horse spurs are not illegal. Though I am certain that some people wish they were.

There not so long as the person using them can controll there lower leg and are using them for a reson other then they just want to look cool or go exta fast. I used them for my boy before he died at a showjumping comp only because I have controll of my legs and he was pretty lazy and had little tiffs about not wanting to listen so they were there just to say i have back up...i did not use them once in the comp but before when warming up he tried to say he was boss i gave him one gentle gap and that was it he knew if he tried he wont win. sorry got a bit carried away but all im saying is that they are useful cos u can just wear them let the horse know you have them and you can ride smothly.

Spurs are not illegal, people will use them in shoes instead of a whip
and some horses need both spur and whip because they are lazy or for other reasons.

No, they're not illegal.

There may be some private clubs that outlaw them ,but generally speaking, they are perfectly OK to use.
