Reports suggest that even the PM's most devoted followers such as Peter Hain and Hazel Blears are now distancing themselves from him so I wondered where that leaves David Cameron.

I would suggest re-wording your question. It may be more accurate to ask whether Cameron and Blair are the only wet Tories left in Parliament. As an observer of UK politics from the other side of the big water, it has struck that Blair's success (ok, not in the past year or so) has been because he's really a Tory--like his dad--rather than a Laborite at heart. On the other side of the equation, it also appears to me that David Cameron isn't quite from the same party as Maggie Thatcher.
