Number one is take over if the prez croaks or gets knocked off. Job number two is go to state funerals, and other "important" dip functions that the prez can't be bothered with. And three is that if the prez is a lame duck, but the period in office was a good one, is to stand there and be clapped on the back by the prez as his replacement so as to keep the presidency in the party.

Those are the main ones but there are other small ceremonial duties also. The slot of VP is pretty useless since a VP is picked mostly to get votes for the prez where he has no pull. He has no say in policy (Sometimes if the prez has trust in him he gets a small voice), or power to veto, etc.

To provide an immediate replacement to the Commander and Chief if the President ever passes away. If George W. Bush ever falls in combat leading our brave troops, Chaney will be there to catch the flag before it hits the ground.
