Tab is great since it shows you the fingering(comes in real handy when you're trying to learn that Clapton solo)-Chords provide the harmony for the song, so you may be comparing apples and oranges here. Learn standard notation-I'd rather use it since it lets me come up with my own interpretation of a song...

basically hear to the rhythm of the music and you will %. up the strumming development. The lead guitarist generally performs the melody and solo factors. Chords are generally carried out via the rhythm or "2nd" guitarist.

I'm much more schooled in reading actual charts, so I don't work with tabs all that much, unless that's all I can find to explain a certain lick.
